Las Payas
Even if you have never tasted a wine from Las Payas, if you have seen one of their labels, you will never forget it. Bright, colourful, tongue in cheek jokes or political statements, the beautiful bottles of Las Payas certainly stand out on a shelf. Started by Santiago Salgado in 2005, after fleeing the metropolitan machine of Buenos Aires, the former radio broadcaster began his wine journey by harvesting and vinifying grapes from abandoned vineyards. He’s motto is and has been that the grapes should do the talking, no intervention is allowed and transparency between winemaker and consumer reigns supreme. The result is a line up of wines that express a whole bunch of character and are able entertain anyone who has the pleasure of trying them.
During the pandemic Santiago successfully crowdfunded to plant his own vines which consist of Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Ancellota, Corvina and Nero d’Avola. He expects the first harvest to take place in 2025, and we can’t wait to see what he brings out.
